Inside cabin with a view? Disney says YES!
From USA Today's Cruise Log with Gene Sloan:
Leave it to Disney to figure out how to give passengers in an inside cabin a view of the ocean. The line today is announcing the 150 inside cabins on its next ship, the Disney Dream, will have "virtual portholes" that will offer a window to the world outside the ship in real time.
Disney says it will install high-definition cameras around the exterior of the 2,500-passenger ship that will feed live video to the "porthole" in every inside cabin. The video feeds will correspond to each cabin's location on the ship, so passengers will be seeing exactly what passengers in oceanview cabins near them are seeing
One twist: Disney says every now and then an animated Disney character such as Peach the starfish from Finding Nemo or even Mickey Mouse may appear in the virtual porthole (superimposed on the live outdoor feed to look as if they were outside the ship).
The virtual portholes are just one of several technological innovations planned for the new ship. For more information, read the complete article on USA Today.
Hurricane Ida alters cruise itineraries.
Hurricane Ida has knocked four cruise ships off course over the past two days as it barrels towards the Gulf Coast of the United States, and at least one more vessel could be affected before the storm makes landfall.
Carnival has announced the Carnival Fantasy's inaugural voyage out of Mobile, Ala., scheduled for Tuesday has been postponed by one day due to the approach of Ida. Carnival also is postponing the Carnival Triumph's first cruise out of New Orleans by one day.
The ships already affected by Ida:
-- The Carnival Inspiration, which departed Tampa on Saturday on a five-night voyage, is skipping a call scheduled for today in Grand Cayman. The 2,052-passenger ship attempted to visit Key West on Sunday as an alternative but had to turn away due to high winds. The vessel will visit Cozumel on Tuesday as scheduled.
-- The 2,974-passenger Carnival Conquest, which departed Galveston, Texas on Sunday on a seven-night voyage, will call in Cozumel on Tuesday instead of Friday as it sails around the storm. Calls in Montego Bay and Grand Cayman scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, respectively, will be flip-flopped.
-- The Carnival Liberty, which departed Miami on Saturday on a seven-night voyage, will visit Ocho Rios today instead of Cozumel. The 2,974-passenger vessel is reversing its scheduled itinerary and will visit Grand Cayman and Cozumel on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.
The Crown Princess, which departed Fort Lauderdale on Saturday, visited Princess Cay Sunday as it also sails a reversed itinerary. The 3,110-passenger vessel will visit Grand Cayman; Roatan, Honduras and Cozumel on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.
